Terrible Lizards Story Explained: Dalton, DJ and Project Pilgrim

The full Terrible Lizards story, from the 1992 Route 66 setting and the Dalton's Dinos fossil to Project Pilgrim, DJ, Dennis, and the crew lift escape.

Last Updated: 2026-11-01

Terrible Lizards tells a small story in a large space. A college student breaks down on Route 66, walks into a failing dinosaur park, and ends up rescuing a child from something that has been living under the attraction for decades. The game delivers most of the plot through notes, tapes, and short conversations, which makes the timeline easy to miss.

This page puts the story in order. It contains full spoilers for all four chapters, including the ending.

Quick answer

In 1992, Jordan breaks down at Dalton's Dinos and is guided underground by Stella to find the owner's missing son, DJ. The park was built on a fossil site that hid a living ecosystem and a black organic material. Dalton died searching for DJ. Jordan finds DJ, restores the special-spectrum lights, recovers the crew lift key from Cavern B, and escapes with DJ after kicking the Hybrid off the lift.

The setting

The game takes place on September 19, 1992, at Dalton's Dinos, a dinosaur-themed roadside attraction off Route 66 in New Mexico. The park was founded by Dalton Coolidge and his wife Elena after they discovered a rare "duelling dinosaurs" fossil nearby. The attraction has been open for about 15 years and is past its prime.

The period setting is not just decoration. The park is full of analog technology, faded signage, and 1990s dinosaur imagery. The game uses the nostalgia of the American roadside attraction as part of its horror: the park is friendly on the surface and wrong underneath.

The characters

Character Role
Jordan College student driving from Chicago to Los Angeles; the player character
Stella Paleontologist and friend of the Coolidge family; guides Jordan over a headset
Dalton Coolidge Park founder; missing when Jordan arrives
Elena Coolidge Dalton's wife and park co-founder
DJ / Dalton Jr. Dalton and Elena's 10-year-old son; missing underground
Dennis DJ's imaginary friend; also a Paleo Pal mascot and a creature in the Deep

Jordan is a student-athlete, polite and eager to help, with a habit of wisecracking under pressure. The game uses the headset calls with Stella to give the player a companion without putting a second character on screen.

Act 1: the park

Jordan's car breaks down on Route 66. The pay phone calls Bob's Body Shop, but the tow is delayed. Jordan walks to Dalton's Dinos, finds the park closed, and enters through the lobby.

The lobby establishes the park's history: the Brontosaurus skeleton, the photo displays, the pre-show projector. Stella contacts Jordan over the headset and explains that the park is not safe. Dalton and DJ are missing.

Jordan restores the power, explores the gift shop and the back rooms, and finds the first evidence that the park's mascots are not just costumes. The chapter ends with the first Brontosaurus chase and Jordan's descent into the caverns.

Act 2: the Digsites

The Digsites are the park's excavation and power infrastructure. Jordan restores two generators, climbs the foreman's tower, and follows Dalton's trail through the flooded caverns. The Brontosaurus patrols the site, and the route is built around avoiding it.

The chapter's story beats are Dalton's journals and the crew's notes. They establish that the park's fossil dig uncovered something older than the dinosaurs: a black, tar-like organic material. The crew called it "the substance" and argued about what to do with it.

Jordan also finds evidence that Dalton knew about the creature. The park founder was not just running an attraction; he was hiding something.

Act 3: the rail caverns

The Rail and Freight Caverns are the park's industrial backbone. Jordan follows the old train lines, restores power, and searches for four fuses while the Allosaurus hunts him.

This is where the story connects the park to Project Pilgrim, an earlier expedition that explored the caves. The project's records describe the black material, the creatures, and the decision to cut the surface's connection to the underground. The survivors hid the crew lift's failsafe key in Cavern B.

Dalton's belongings appear in the chapter, including his farewell note. The note confirms that Dalton went underground to find DJ and did not expect to come back.

Act 4: the Deep

Jordan reaches the Deep and finds DJ alive in a camp. DJ is not afraid of the creatures. He talks about Dennis as a friend, and he asks Jordan to retrieve an Allosaurus tooth from the Dennis lair.

The lair is a nest of bones, toys, and personal objects. When Jordan takes the tooth, the Hybrid appears. The creature is the game's final threat, and it is tied to the Dennis name.

Jordan returns the tooth to DJ, and DJ explains that the special-spectrum lights can drive the creature back. Jordan restores the lights, which reveals that the crew lift key was taken into Cavern B. The entrance is blocked, so Jordan uses dynamite from Cavern A to open it.

The crew lift escape

Jordan climbs the Cavern B spire, recovers the crew lift key from the remains at the top, and fights through the Hybrid to return to the lift. The lift ascends, the Hybrid attacks, and Jordan climbs the outside of the moving structure.

At the top, Jordan kicks the creature off the lift. The lift reaches the surface, and Jordan and DJ step out. Stella's car is waiting.

What happened to Dalton?

Dalton went underground to find DJ and died. His farewell message is addressed to Elena, DJ, and Stella. The game does not show the body, and the exact cause of death is not depicted, but the message is clear: Dalton knew he was not coming back.

Dalton's notes also reveal that he knew more about the creature than he told his family. He was trying to contain the situation, not just run a park.

What is the black material?

The black, tar-like organic material is the story's biggest unanswered question. Project Pilgrim found it, the park's crew argued about it, and the creatures are connected to it. The game does not explain whether the material created the Hybrid, attracted the dinosaurs, or is something older.

The material is the thread a sequel would pull. The ending leaves it unresolved.

What is Dennis?

Dennis is DJ's name for his imaginary friend, and the game ties the name to the Hybrid. The Dennis mascot is also a Paleo Pal character, which creates a deliberate ambiguity: is Dennis a costume, a creature, or a name DJ gave to something he found?

The game does not answer the question directly. The Dennis guide covers the evidence.

The ending

The main story has one ending. Jordan and DJ escape, Stella is waiting, and the park is left behind. The Hybrid's fate is ambiguous, and the black material is still down there.

The ending is not a twist. It is a survival. The game's final image is the car on the road, which mirrors the opening and closes the Route 66 loop.

Timeline

Time Event
Before 1977 Dalton and Elena discover the "duelling dinosaurs" fossil
Late 1970s Dalton's Dinos opens
1980s Project Pilgrim explores the caves and finds the black material
1992-09-19 Jordan arrives; Dalton and DJ are missing
1992-09-19 Jordan restores the park, descends, finds DJ, and escapes

The exact dates of the park's founding and Project Pilgrim are not given in full. The game uses Dalton's journals to date the fossil discovery to the late 1970s and the park's opening to the early 1980s.

Themes

Terrible Lizards is about the gap between a sanitized attraction and the real thing underneath. The park sells friendly dinosaurs, mascot suits, and merchandise. The caves hold the animals, the black material, and the people who tried to control it.

The story is also about a child's ability to accept what adults cannot. DJ treats Dennis as a friend, not a monster. The game does not resolve whether that is innocence, denial, or a deeper understanding.
